Painted trillium is an exquisite acid-loving woodland trillium with white petals brushed crimson at the base, demanding the cool, moist, humus-rich soil of conifer and mountain forests. Young unfolding leaves have been used as a cooked potherb, though picking them can set this slow colonizer back for years.
