Most garden-compatible Joe-pye — shorter and stiffer than hollow-stem, with purple-spotted stems and flatter flower clusters. Formerly *Eupatorium maculatum*. Like other Joe-Pye weeds, the burnt roots have traditionally flavored food as a salt substitute.
