A clump-forming emergent with bold, glossy, arrowhead-shaped leaves and slender green spathes tucked at the base. Thrives standing in a few inches of water at pond and marsh margins; its berry clusters are a favored food of wood ducks, and it anchors muddy banks against erosion.
