Scarlet gilia (skyrocket) is a western biennial that sends up wands of trumpet-shaped scarlet flowers irresistible to hummingbirds, a spectacular, drought-tolerant native for sunny, gravelly slopes. The plant has been boiled into a tea, and children traditionally suck nectar from the flowers.
